ADDIS - The YMCA of the Capital Area held its Annual Meeting on May 13, honoring the many individuals who have helped the Y serve the needs of the Baton Rouge community. Guests received an invitation to the celebration via message in a bottle.

The meeting, presided over by Metro Board Chair, Rickey Heroman and YMCA of the Capital Area CEO, Bob Jacobs, was held at the Renaissance Hotel. The theme "Discovering Treasures" showcased the many treasured moments, people, programs and opportunities found only at the Y.

The Y surprised guests with a celebratory flash mob to the Y's own rendition of "Celebration" sung by Judy Whitney Davis. Guests also enjoyed dinner, fellowship and testimonials from members and program participants. This year the Y recognized several individuals who have dedicated their time and effort to helping the Y. The Treasured Volunteer Award went to outstanding volunteers from all eight YMCA locations. The Dow Westside YMCA Treasured Volunteer recipient was Owen Cope. Other recipients included Terry and Tina Sullivan, David Vincent, Garner Moore, Donni Shields, David Shelby, Lion Evelyn Kirk and Jacqueline Jones.

This past year alone the Y supported 38,761 youth through YMCA sports, swimming, childcare and education programs. The Y also provided health and wellness programs for over 29,000 people in our community. The Y's Annual Community Support Campaign provided over $518,000 in scholarships for YMCA programs and services. The Y is thankful for the efforts of 1,025 volunteers that gave 49,121 hours of service to the Y.
