BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced today that private non-profit organizations, local governments, and elementary and middle schools wishing to apply for the next round of Safe Routes To School funding through the Highway Safety Safe Routes to School Program are encouraged to attend 2013 Safe Routes to School Training.

The training will take place on Nov. 7 in Baton Rouge. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn how to write a competitive application, ask questions about eligible projects, and get a head start on writing their proposal. Space is limited. Interested parties should contact Shalanda Cole at shalanda.cole@la.gov.

Safe Routes to School programs aim to improve the health of kids and the community by making walking and bicycling to school safer, easier and more enjoyable.

These programs work to assess the safety of school travel routes; make changes to current conditions; educate students about safe travel; and encourage walking and biking to school.
