School Board introduces redistricting maps

PLAQUEMINE – The Iberville Parish School Board introduced proposed redistricting maps for eight single member districts and one at-large at its regularly scheduled meeting Oct. 14.
Redistricting LLC, prepared the six-reapportionment plans, which will lacerate the 15-member panel.
As a result of a U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act, the board under duress to redraw lines before qualifying deadlines for 2014 elections.
Members were told in the past they could disregard a state law requiring the size of the board to be no more than nine seats but have come to learn they must comply with a 2010 state law sponsored by then Sen. Rob Marionneaux of Grosse Tete.
President Melvin Lodge closed off discussion about reapportionment and said the board will take a vote on the issue following a public hearing Nov. 4 at 5 p.m.
The six redistricting maps are posted on the school district website www.ipsb.net.
The board also approved a condolence resolution for the family of MSA-East student Rebecca Bihm.
In other news, the board discussed and considered rejecting uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage from its automobile policy.
Issuance of one-time supplemental checks to active employees also was discussed.
Providing after school meals for extra curricular activities was also considered.
In other news, the board considered a cooperative endeavor agreement with the Board of Supervisors for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.
Finally, the board changed its next regularly scheduled meeting scheduled for Veteran’s Day to Nov. 4.
