Iberville Parish School Performance Scores continue to improve

PLAQUEMINE - Iberville Parish School System earned a district score of 78.7, which is a  “C” on the new letter grading scale, according to the School Performance Scores issued last week by the Louisiana Department of Education.

This is the seventh consecutive year the district has improved its district performance score.

It marks the first under a new system of scoring meant to simplify the scoring formula and raise standards for student achievement.

“Changes made to the formula have led to real increases in student achievement,” said Superintendent John White. “Students are reaping the benefits.”

North Iberville Elementary and Crescent Elementary schools both earned a “B” letter grade on their school performance score. 

“We are pleased with our tremendous progress as we move our score up each year and are thrilled with advancing our school scores in every case,” said Superintendent Dr. P. Edward Cancienne, Jr. “Our students’ progress is a testament to the dedication, professional expertise, and truly phenomenal work of all of our teachers and school leaders, support staff, and district leaders. Our parents and community, through their continuing support of our children and schools, are a key component in our students’ success.”

According to the report, two Iberville schools earned a “B” score: North Iberville with an 85.8 and Crescent with an 85.

Schools earning a “C” were East Iberville with a 73.2; Dorseyville with an 83.6; Iberville Elementary with an 80.5; Plaquemine High School with a 73.7 and White Castle High school with a 75.6 score.

“There are many initiatives going on in our schools, including a more laser-focused effort on students that are struggling as well as raising the bar for our ‘basic and above’ students achievers to make greater progress,” Cancienne added.

He noted that new computers, educational software and Common Core standards and materials are also a major asset.

“With a record number of students showing improvement on state tests the results are certainly very encouraging,” BESE President Chas Roemer said. “It is a testament to the efforts of students and teachers that these gains were achieved according to the new higher performance standards.”
