This is the 33rd year that area students have been serviced by the Reading is Fundamental Program. In RIF, second-grade children receive books three times a year. The three distributions are held in October, January and March. Parish coordinator Heddie Carville obtains funds from area businesses, which are matched by federal funds and used to purchase books. The Plaquemine Service League members handle the distributions at Iberville Elementary, Crescent Elementary and St. John Elementary. Local businesses annually supporting RIF with funding are Bayou Fabricators, Plaquemine Rotary Club, Citizen’s Bank, Iberville Bank, Plaquemine Bank, A.Wilbert’s Sons and the dental office of Dr. Patrick Dooley. Members handling the distribution at Iberville Elementary are Nealy LeBanc dressed as a witch, Courtney Elliott and Shawn Guerin.
