Lady Green Devils knock off local pair to move to court/net 3-0 record

Plaquemine High’s Lady Green Devils continued to streak on the volleyball courts last week as they knocked off a pair of parish rivals to boost their early season court and net mark to a perfect 3-0.

The PHS girls defeated North Iberville High in four sets last Wednesday and the next day they topped cross-town rival St. John High four sets. Also last week the White Castle High Lady Bulldogs beat Brusly High in five sets.

Plaquemine won its second game of the season up in Rosedale, beating the hosting Lady Bears of North Iberville 3-1. PHS won the first set by a 25-20 score and then the second by a 25-16 count. NIHS rallied back to win the third by a 25-19 score, but the Lady Devils won the bumper set by a hard-fought 25-23 score.

Senior Amber McCoy led PHS to the victory at NIHS with a dozen kills to go with 7 digs, 4 aces, and a trio of assists. Jasmine Burnstein also had a solid effort with 20 assists, 10 digs, and a pair of kills. Candace Hastings added a half-dozen kills, and four digs and blocks.

Shannon West led NIHS with 8 assists, 7 kills, and 5 aces and digs. Niketra Beraud had 15 assists and 4 digs, while Janika Scott had 8 assists, 6 kills, and 5 aces.

Against St. John the Lady Green Devils had to rally back after dropping the first set by a 25-16 score. Again it was McCoy and Burnstein leading the way as the PHS girls rallied for set scores of 25-20, 26-24, and 15-13. The Lady Eagles gave PHS its toughest test in three games.

McCoy turned in 20 kills to pace the PHS efforts. She also had 10 digs and 5 aces. Burnstein had 25 assists, 10 kills, and 7 digs.

Morgan Amarello collected 15 assists for St. John, while Ashley Mumphrey had 9 kills and a pair of aces. Kylee Brown added 19 assists.

WCHS:

The Lady Bulldogs pushed their season record to 2-1 last week with their second-straight win over a high classification foe. White Castle topped Brusly in five sets by a 3-2 count. WCHS won the first set by a 25-18 score, but lost the second by a 25-23 score. Back came Brusly with a 25-9 victory, but the Lady Bulldogs would not be denied as they claimed the game with a 15-6 victory.

Tyrenee Foster turned in 8 kills and a pair of blocks, while Stacy Saylor netted 10 assists and a trio of kills. Shelby Martin finished with 7 aces and 5 kills.

Alivia McKey had an amazing 46 assists to lead the Brusly effort.
