NEARING THE FINISH LINE ... Key matchups headline prep football tonight

It's been a tough season for the Plaquemine Green Devils, who remained winless against Port Allen.

The St. John Eagles hope to continue their quest for at least a runner-up spot in the post-season playoffs when they visit Loreauville for a District 7-2A matchup tonight (Friday). The contest headlines a night of key district matchup in the penultimate week of regular season action. Kickoff on all games is 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the White Castle Bulldogs hope to keep their playoff hopes alive when they head to Donaldsonville to face longtime rival Ascension Catholic in a key 9-1A contest. Other Friday night games include North Iberville hosting West St. John in 9-1A fare, East Iberville traveling to Hanson Memorial for a non-district outing and Plaquemine seeking its first win of the season when they visit 3A state powerhouse Lutcher.

The St. John War Eagles maintained solid footing in District 9-2A action Friday with a 42-18 rout over Jeanerette. White Castle, meanwhile, registered a win over North Iberville while Plaquemine suffered a lopsided loss to St. Thomas More, a 6th-ranked team in Class 5A.

Shelby Hemmenway had runs of 14, 7 and 14 runs to power the Eagles, who led 28 -12 at halftime and added one touchdown apiece in the third and fourth stanzas.

St. John (4-2, 2-0)continues district fare this Friday at Loreauville.

In other action, Schimichael Valentine took at 19-yard pass from Jonathan Roberts to pull White Castle (3-3, 2-1 in district) past North Iberville 21-16 in a crucial 9-1A matchup.

Jyruss Edwards scored on a 32-yard scamper for WCHS.

Trevean Hawkins scored on a pass from Steven Williams and on a 16-yard run to lead North Iberville.

North Iberville remained winless after six games.

Plaquemine High of District 9-3A also remained winless after a 45-14 loss to St. Thomas More.

East Iberville forfeited its game against West St. John due to an inadequate number of players for the game.
