PLAYOFF ROUNDUP … St. John advances to Round 2 Friday night; season ends for Brusly, White Castle, Port Allen

The St. John Eagles, the runners-up in District 7-2A, toppled St. Helena Central in the first round of playoff action. The Eagles tentatively host Farmerville in Round 2.

The St. John Eagles defeated St. Helena Central 42-34 to advance to the second round of playoff action in Class 2A Friday night. The Eagles will face north Louisiana powerhouse Farmerville in round two next Friday. The first round of playoffs, however marked the end of the season for White Castle, Brusly and Port Allen.

For St. John, Guy Morgan had a 66-yard pass from Michael Martinez and a 21-yard run to power the Eagles, while Warren Dates scored on a 23-yard scamper, Josh Johnson had a 14-yard TD run, T.J. Williams scored on a 1-yarder and Jude Barker took a 40-yard pass from Martinez.

St. John scored 27 points in the first half as the Eagles reached the playoffs during the first season of head coach Tut Musemeche.

Brusly fell 35-20 in a hard-fought battle against perennial 3A state contender Cecilia. Marcus Wiltz scored three touchdowns to pace Cecilia, who faces Independence in round two. Marlon Reed had a 38-yard TD reception from Chet Simoneaux, who also had a six-yard TD. Brent Henry had a 1-yarder for the Panthers, who reached the playoffs in the first season with Plaquemine resident/former St. John mentor Erik Willis.

The White Castle Bulldogs ended their season with a 31-6 loss as Mangham. No other details were immediately available on the contest held in Concordia Parish. WCHS finished its season 5-4.

Port Allen fell 42-7 against Richwood, which was led by a three-touchdown effort by Greg Johnson. The Pels ended their season 6-3.
