Parish sales taxes to rise 1/3 cent on January 1

Iberville Parish’s sales tax will go up by a third of a cent starting January 1, Chief Administrative Officer Edward A. “Lucky” Songy Jr. reminded local businesses in a recent notice.

“It is essential that all registers be properly programmed to calculate the new tax rates beginning January 1, 2009,” he said.

In 2006, voters approved a new one-cent sales tax, to be phased in at one-third cent a year over three years, for capital improvements.

This increase, the final increment, will raise local taxes to five percent on the dollar, the maximum allowed without special permission from the Louisiana Legislature.

Parishwide, except in the City of St. Gabriel, three cents will go to the Iberville Parish Council and the parish’s six municipalities.

In St. Gabriel levies a one-third cent tax within its corporate limits, so the parishwide tax will be levied at two and a third cents there. The same two percent will be levied for the School Board.

Further information on the changes is available from the parish Sales Tax Department at (225) 687-5200.
