Parish Council okays travel advances for its members

The Iberville Parish Council last week agreed to provide up to $140 a day in travel advances to its members when they attend approved seminars or training meetings outside the parish.

“This is an alternate procedure,” said Council Chairman Eugene P. Stevens Jr. “You don’t have to do it. You can just bring back receipts.”

Parish Attorney Scott Stassi, who has dealt with the Legislative Auditor on the provision, cautioned councilmen who take the advance to bring back receipts to justify their expenditures.

Several White Castle officials had to go before a grand jury to justify their travel advances after the Legislative Auditor cited potential excesses.

“If you do this, come back with receipts,” Stassi cautioned the council. “Make sure the money is justified.”

The measure was promoted by Parish Councilman Howard Oubre of Plaquemine.
