Early week girls basketball report
Parish girls’ basketball teams played a handful of early week round ball games. Here is a report on the local action:
The Lady Green Devils evened up their early basketball record at 4-4 early last week by downing another 3-A foe, Baker High, by a 53-50 score in overtime.
Visiting Baker jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, but hosting Plaquemine rallied with a trio of short-point leads over the three period to tie the score at 49-49 at the end of regulation. PHS won the game with a 4-1 scoring margin in the overtime period. PHS rallied with margins of 11-10, 15-13, and 16-12 to push the game into the extra stanza.
Brittany Brown continued to be a scoring leader for the Lady Green Devils as she netted a game-high 21 points to maintain a solid 20-plus-point average over the first eight games of the hoop campaign. Jazmine Burnstein was steady as well, tallying 11 points, while first-year point guard Brianna Arnold scored 9 points. Senior Amber McCoy meshed in 8, while Candace Hastings added 3 and Shancei Anderson scored a point.
Ericka Leflore and Anshani Brown combined for 33 points to lead the visiting Baker girls.
On the eve of their annual Lady Bulldog tournament the White Castle High girls forged an impressive single-game victory over upper classification visitor Port Allen High Tuesday night, beating the 3-A Lady Pelicans by a 45-41 score.
Port Allen led by a 22-19 halftime score, but the hosting Class A WCHS girls rallied back with a strong third period 19-8 scoring effort to take the lead.
Ronquel Gibson paced the WCHS scoring attack with a game-high 15 points, while Shelby Martin added 11 points. Tyrennee Foster chipped in 6 points while Bryanshel Gibson tallied 4. Erica Allen scored 3, while Meeker Melancon, Angela Brown, and Simone Beauvais combined evenly for 6 more Lady Bulldog points.
Ronnie Howard bucketed a game-high 27 points for Port Allen, while Christine Harrell chipped in 12 points.
WCHS moved to 2-3 overall with the victory.
WCHS also won the Junior Varsity game, taking a 31-22 victory.
Class A North Iberville High claimed a 45-10 girls’ hoop victory over hosting 2-A St. John High Monday of last week in a contest between long time parish round ball rivals.
Senior veteran Shannon West led the Lady Bears to the lopsided victory with a game-high 17 points, while Lady Bear teammate Niketra Beraud meshed in 10 points. Kadijah Mims added 6 points, while Raven Williams and Tamakica Dorsey scored 5 apiece. Audriana Marshall added 2 for the Lady Bears.
St. John was led by the trio of Hannah Pitre, Kathryn D’Albor, and Jessica Lee with 3 points apiece. Brandi Miller added 2 points.
