Plaquemine High’s Green Devils added the Broadmoor Buccaneer basketball tournament crown to their early list of accomplishments last week as they topped the hosting BHS boys by a 38-31 score to notch the title Friday night.

Coach Denny Wright’s PHS club upped its season record to an outstanding 9-1 by beating Broadmoor for the tourney crown as well as Tara High in the opening round, taking the Trojans by a 60-41 score.

It was the second meeting of the early season between PHS and Broadmoor. The Green Devils won both, but had a bit more difficulty in taking Friday night’s game at BHS.

PHS hit on only 2 of 15 free throws in the fourth period, allowing the hosting upper classification 4-A Bucs to chip away at a 34-18 lead established over the first three periods of play by the Green Devils.

PHS came out strong in the first half, forcing almost a dozen turnovers and a number of missed shots by the hosts. That enabled the locals to build up a huge 23-8 halftime lead that they eventually needed to overcome their poor free throw shooting in the late stages of the game.

Other than their 11-point loss to home-standing Bob Jones High of Huntsville, Alabama during Thanksgiving week, the Buccaneers gave the Green Devils their closest competition thus far this season. The Green Devils also were plagued by poor free throw shooting against Bob Jones High. Last year their biggest downfall in 10 season losses was their shooting. However, the solid PHS defensive game continued to persist and that has long been the key to their team’s success.

Junior DeMario Camper led the way for the Green Devils in the title match with 12 points. Senior Maquel Robinson added 11 more, while Deryl Lewis bagged a key basket early in the game to give PHS a commanding lead.

The Green Devils had little trouble in doing away with another Class 4-A foe in the two-night tourney. Plaquemine jumped out to a 25-15 halftime advantage and coasted from there to the 60-41 victory over Tara on opening night.

Robinson led the way with 18 points, while both Lewis and Cody Edmond chipped in 10 points apiece.

Hazem Tuqan netted 17 for Tara, while teammate Joseph Kirk added 15 markers.

Hosting Broadmoor beat Belaire by a 47-42 score in the other opening night contest. Derieo Herron of BHS was the high scorer with 17 points. Meanwhile, Tara beat Belaire by a 74-63 score on the final night of play as Tuqan netted 20 and Kirk 17 points.
