River West could go under Chapter 11

Local hospital River West Medical Center could go under Chapter 11 today is the state Dept. of Health and Hospitals, the Tax Division of the Iberville Parish Council, and other creditors have their way through the court process.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Douglas D. Dodd has called for a hearing today to perhaps appoint a Chapter 11 trustee to oversee the on-going business of the Plaquemine hospital.

Hopes were to keep the medical center open for emergency room care mainly because local chemical industry plant workers may need immediate access rather than have to cross the Mississippi River to be treated in case of emergency. A court appointed Chapter 11 trustee could keep the hospital open.

An involuntary bankruptcy filing prevents further losses while the facility is still in operation.

The state DHH recently advanced $150,000 to River West so it could pay its employees their salaries.

The facility is owned by Shiloh Health Services, which bought the hospital from Community Health Systems, Inc. in 2007.
