PLATE AND MOUND…First-year varsity starter Shea Ourso has been solid both at the plate and on the pitcher’s mound as a reliever for the St. John High Eagle baseball club this season. SJHS moved to 3-0 in district play last week.

St. John High’s Eagles pushed their District 7-2A baseball record to 3-0 last week with victories over Jeanerette and Loreauville.

Coach Heath Whittington’s local club routed Jeanerette 19-0, but had a bit more competition on the road, trimming Loreauville 6-2.

Jude Doughty, Shea Ourso, and Derrick Savoy combined to toss a one-hit shutout at Jeanerette, while the offense exploded for 13 hits.

Mike Martinez was a perfect three for three at the plate with a pair of double and RBI, while Andre Landry and Justin Hudson slugged triples. Landry added a single, drove in two runs and scored three times. Hudson added a double, two RBI, and also scored three times.

Landon Orcino went two for two with a pair of doubles, three runs batted in, and two runs scored, while Cole Verret and Corey David both went one for one. Verret drove in three runs with a double, while David had a double and two RBI went one with two RBI. Shelby Hemenway had a two-run double, while Chad Morales had an RBI base hit.

The Eagles stole ten bases, were allowed six walks, and had a trio of sacrifices as they rolled up 19 runs.

Against hosting Loreauville, right-handed starter Kade Yarbough ran his pitching record to 5-0 with a four-hitter. His pitching helped the Eagles survive five errors in the field.

Offensively the SJHS boys collected six hits and took advantage of a trio of LHS errors in the field to score their six runs.

Joining Yarbrough as a team leader in the district victory was senior outfielder Hemenway, who slugged a key two-run home run to spark the offense. David also managed a clutch hit.

The two wins boosted SJHS to a 10-6 season mark.
