The controversial flood control structure at Alligator Bayou was opened for less than a day Sunday and Monday to defend against heavy weekend rains.

Iberville Environmental and Permits Manager John Clark said the structure was opened at 9 a.m. Sunday when water began backing up in Alligator Bayou. As per an agreement with Ascension Parish, the structure was re-opened at 5:30 a.m. when the water in Bayou Manchac dipped to a level lower than Alligator Bayou, he said.

“A long as Manchac is lower than Alligator Bayou, we will leave the locks open,” he said.

Emergency Preparedness Director Laurie Doiron said storms dumped 2.5 inches of water in Iberville Parish on Saturday and Sunday
