RESIDENTS TO VOTE ON TERM LIMITS

TRYVE BRACKIN, Post/South Editor

Parish voters were asked Tuesday night to amend the home rule charter to eliminate term limits placed on council members and the parish president.

By a vote of 9-3, the Iberville Parish Council requested an election to determine whether or not limits should be placed on the time council/president can hold office.

The parish switched its form of government from police jury to home rule charter in 1997. The home rule charter includes term limits for the council and only a vote by parish residents can amend the limits.

Also at the Tuesday council meeting, approval was made to purchase land on which a new North Iberville Community Center could be built as well as to purchase property needed to extend Enterprise Boulevard further. The council also approved a resolution to ask the Iberville Parish School Board to consider all means of keeping North Iberville High School from closing.
