Plaquemine Fourth of July celebration set for Saturday

BASH ON THE BAYOU ... A large crowd is expected Saturday for the annual Fourth of July celebration at the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park. Festivities begin at noon.

Plaquemine’s annual Main Street Fourth of July Celebration again will be held with family-oriented activities and free admission to the Bayou Water Front Park, the Lock, and the Iberville Museum. Also, the Depot Antique Market will be open.

Special events will begin that Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with the annual boat parade departure from the boat ramp across from the Parish Jail on Bayou Road. Expected arrival at the water front park is 3 p.m. This year’s Grand Marshals will be at the lead of the boat parade. The marshals are all past and present military veterans. Those interested in taking part in the boat parade need only to show up at 2 p.m. at the boat launch on Bayou Plaquemine near the jail.

The water park will be filled with numerous activities for the celebration., including a children’s village, spacewalks, games, and more. Booth space is still available for food and crafts. If interested, contact 687-3116 for information.

Returning to this year’s events will be the Parish Council and Tourism Commission Persimmon Crawl, which are pirogue and canoe obstacle races. The races are set to begin at 4 p.m. at the warter front park. For additional information on the Crawl races, contact Iberville Tourism at 687-2642 or the Iberville Council office at 687-5190.

The museum will be sponsoring old fashioned children’s games and a workshop for children. Meanwhile, the Lock historic site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Plaquemine Depot Antique Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an array of antiques and artwork. Forte Grove, which makes breads, cinnamon rolls, and biscotti, will be at the depot offering their delights to the palate.

At 6 p.m. the sounds of the Kane Glaze will be heard and a jitterbug dance contest is set for 7 p.m. on the boardwalk in front of the band.

The celebration will end at 9 p.m. with a dramatic fireworks display capping off the day.

NOTE: Ice chests are prohibited in the water park. And, do not forget your lawn chairs.
