BEGINNING A REVERSE...SJHS Eagle QB Mike Martinez (9) hands the ball off to RB Josh Johnson (21) to begin a reverse handoff play. A split second later, Johnson gave the ball off to SE Da’Vante Williams (18), who went left for big yardage behind a block by Josh Oubre (71) and other Eagle linemen.

Class A second-ranked St. John High rolled up a 39-10 football victory last night (Thursday, Sept. 10) by routing 2-A visitor Pope John Paul II.

The Eagles rolled up 21 points in the first period and a 33-0 halftime lead before relaxing a bit in the third stanza. The visitors did not give up and rallied for 10-straight points in the third quarter before the Eagle regained control of the momentum and scored in the final period to win by 29 points.

Senior running back Josh Johnson led the offensive attack with 125 yards rushing and two first-half TD runs. Quarterback Mike Martinez passed for 126 yards and a TD to Conner Case. The junior QB also added some key rushing yards. He hit on big passes to Casey Toussant, Da’Vante Williams, and Seven Brocksmith to set up scores. Williams added 100 yards rushing. He set up one score with a 29-yard scamper and scored on a 15-yard dash. Toussant scored the final TD with a 4-yard run, while Corey David capped the first-half scoring with a 3-yard run.

After easy wins over 4-A Belaire and 2-A Pope John Paul, the Eagles face a tough, top ten-ranked University High next week in one of the area’s headliner lower classification games.
