St. John squeaks past West St. John; WCHS tops Livonia, PHS loses in 2-OT

St. John High trimmed West St. John 28-27 to claim the District 8-A football title last night in Edgard, while White Castle High assured itself of a berth in the state playoffs and third place in the local Class A league with a 43-8 rout of hosting East Iberville High.

While, SJHS and WCHS were closing out the regular prep gridiron season with big road victories last night, Plaquemine High suffered its third-straight District 8-3A loss, falling in double overtime to visiting Livonia High 41-38 on a field goal. Despite the loss the 6-4 overall PHS Green Devils still have a shot at a state playoff berth with their overall power points.

SJHS (9-1) remains as the top-seeded team in Class A playoff bracketing, while West St. John still has a high power-point showing as the second place club in the 8-A with a 7-3 overall mark. White Castle has strong power points and a 5-4 record to go with a 3-2 district showing and third place in the 8-A.

St. John won in overtime by tying the score at 27-all on a 15-yard TD pass reception by senior running back standout Josh Johnson. Sophomore place kicker Connor Case entered the game and nailed the PAT to give the Eagles the district title via the one-point victory. SJHS rallied from a 21-0 halftime deficit with 21 third-quarter points and the game went into overtime at 21-21. West St. John scored on a 10-yard run by QB Dray Joseph, but the Rams had their extra point attempt blocked. SJHS rallied back to score and hit the PAT to win.

Tyree Brackin and Sha’Michael Valentine scored two running TDs and both rushed for over 100 yards, while QB Ronald Martin hit Terrance Taylor and Isaac O’Bear on long TD passes as the Bulldogs of WCHS routed long time parish rival East Iberville.
