All three locals fall in quarterfinal hoop action

State championship hope vanished for three local basketball teams after each was eliminated in quarterfinal action Friday night.

Richwood upset No.2 seed Plaquemine in Class 3A playoff action. In Class 1A, top-seeded Christian Life rolled past East Iberville 73-49 and perennial state contender White lost to Country Day 69-53.

In Monroe, Richwood held the visiting Green Devils to only four points in the second quarter en route to the win. Plaquemine led 18-12 in the first quarter. The Green Devils held a two-point lead at the half, but Richwood outscored PHS by four in the third stanza.

Jeffrey Ricard had the game-high 20 points for Plaquemine, while Travion Hawkins bucketed 19.

Plaquemine ended its season 32-3.

In Baton Rouge, Christian Life held a five-point lead at the end of the first period and led 40-28 at halftime over East Iberville. CLA held the Tigers to eight points in the final quarter.

Donovan Richardson led EIHS with 16 points, while Sheldon Balloms had 12 and Greg Pickett 10. McCall Tomeny led CLA with 29 points.

EIHS finished its season 21-11.

In Metairie, hosting Country Day eclipsed the 20-point mark in both quarters of the second half to pull past White Castle. The Bulldogs mustered only nine points in the first quarter and trailed 25-19 at the half.

Ronald Martin led the Bulldogs with 23 points. Matt Derenbacker netted 36 points to propel Country Day.

White Castle closed its season 19-15.
