BREAKING NEWS: Contract employee killed at Dow site

A contract employee acting as a flagman for an 18-wheeler backing down a street at the Dow Chemical site was killed instantly early Friday when he fell under the wheels of the rig, Maj. Johnny Blanchard of the Iberville Sheriff's Office said.

He identified the victim as David Montero, 61, of Donaldsonville.

“[He] either tripped or was knocked down, and was struck by the wheels and killed instantly,” Blanchard said. “...We don't know what caused him to fall.”

The driver and another flagman immediately saw what had happened, the major said. All the parties involved were Dow contract employees.

Blanchard said no charges are pending against the driver, but the deputies did do a blood test on the driver as a precaution, as is the case in any traffic fatality.

According to a Dow news release on the accident, Montero was an employee of Performance Contractors, which is managing  communications with his family and their employees.

“Today is a very sad day at our site,” said Dow Leader Sharon Cole. “Our immediate focus and our prayers are with his family and his co-workers. I personally commit that we will work closely with Performance to learn more about what happened and how it can be prevented in the future.”
