Four killed in three-vehicle crash near Grosse Tete

Staff reports

A fiery crash involving three 18-wheelers and an SUV killed four people early Friday morning on Interstate 10, approximately one mile from the Grosse Tete exit.

Baton Rouge City Police Officer Russell, Kiger, 37, was among the four people killed in the crash. He was reportedly riding with his cousin, Jacob Kiger, 38, of Denham Springs.

The crash occurred around 5 a.m., forcing a shutdown of the highway until early in the afternoon.

Louisiana State Police said a tractor trailer traveling eastbound on I-10 sideswiped another semi-truck that was parked on the shoulder.

When the driver lost control, he veered off the road, crossed the median and collided with a third 18-wheeler in the westbound traffic.

It was only after the fire was extinguished that investigators noticed that an SUV was also involved in the crash.

Also killed in the crash were the drivers of the eastbound 18-wheeler, Mark Wood, 34, of Denham Springs, and the westbound semi, driven by Frey Guerro, of Edinburg, Texas.
