Gray Monkey Parade slated for April 16

Iberville Parish pre-schoolers are invited to join the silver anniversary edition of the Gray Monkey Parade, which lines up a noon at Plaquemine City Hall Friday, April 16.

The parade, usually held just before Mardi Gras, was snowed out on before the scheduled 25th annual event. The new date falls in National Library Week.

Lolita Daigre, a teacher at Plaquemine Elementary, started the Gray Monkey Parade in 1946.  It is returning this year to Railroad Avenue.

Parking will be available in the public parking area behind the Veteran’s Memorial next to City Hall – but not 30-minute or reserved parking spaces.  Parking also will be available along designated streets, except in driveways, near fire hydrants or in “no parking” areas.

Participants should line up at noon at the parade’s starting point at Meriam Street and Railroad Avenue next to City Hall. 

At 12:30 p.m sharp, the parade will move from Meriam Street, to the east lane of Railroad Avenue, go to Main Street, make a U-turn in front of the Depot Market and return to city hall in the west lane.

All entries must be walking or hand pulled.  For participants' safety, bicycles, motorized vehicles, pedaled power riding toys such as “Big Wheels” will be forbidden.

Plaquemine Police officers and the Iberville Sheriff’s deputies will monitor traffic.
