Plaquemine High and St. John softball teams advanced early this week in the state playoffs after garnering first-round victories.

PHS (22nd seed) turned in a mild upset by beating host West Feliciana (11th seed) by a 7-6 score to advance to the second round of the Class 3-A playoffs. The Lady Green Devils host Parkview Baptist (sixth seed) this afternoon (Thursday, April 22) at PHS.

St. John (second seed) breezed by visiting Arcadia (31st seed) Monday afternoon in Plaquemine by a 16-1 score. The Lady Eagles now travel to Merryville High tomorrow (Friday) for a Class 1-A second round contest.

The parish’s third playoff qualifier White Castle High (25th seed) lost Tuesday to hosting and District 8-A rival Ascension CHS (8th seed) by a 15-2 score in Donaldsonville in another Class 1-A first-round contest. The loss ended the first WCHS softball season since the early 1970s, but the first-year Lady Bulldogs closed with an amazing 10-6 overall record.
