Federal arraignment: Mario Brown enters not guilty pleas

DEIDRE CRUSE, Governmental Reporter

White Castle Police Chief Mario D. Brown pleaded not guilty Thursday to 11 criminal charges of bribery and fraud in connection with a garbage can cleaning service called Cifer 5000.

The police chief, running for re-election this fall, entered the plea at an arraignment in U. S District Court in Baton Rouge.

A federal grand jury issued indictments July 7 against Brown and his brother, White Castle Mayor Maurice “Big Moe” Brown, along with New Roads Mayor Thomas A. Nelson after an FBI operation called “Operation Blighted Officials.”

Maurice Brown and Nelson entered not guilty pleas last week.
