Annual Mass at Madonna Chapel set for August 16
Annual Mass will be held Monday, August 16 at Bayou Goula’s Madonna Chapel, known as “The World’s Smallest Church”.
Father Joey Angeles of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in White Castle will celebrate mass that Monday morning at 9 a.m.
Following Mass a raffle drawing and sale of cakes and drinks will be held. This is done each year to provide funds for the upkeep of the church. Worshippers assemble on the front lawn for the once a year Mass.
The church was built in 1903 by Tony Gullo in thanks to the Virgin Mary for the recovery of his seriously ill child. The church measures only 9 foot by 9 foot and will only accommodate one or two people at a time. It was written up years ago in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” as the smallest church in the world.
Rosary is said from August 1 to 15 each year in preparation for the Mass that celebrates the feast of the Assumption of Mary.
The chapel location is four miles north of Nottoway Plantation Resort on the River Road (Hwy. 405) near Bayou Goula.
