Jamboree football set for parish grid teams tonight-tomorrow

TIGER LINEBACKER...Warren Clark is expected to be a key stopper for the East Iberville High defense this season at the linebacker position. Clark and his teammates take on McKinley High tomorrow (Friday) in the East Baton Rouge Jamboree at Olympia Stadium.

Iberville Parish’s four prep football teams head to preseason jamborees tonight (Thursday, August 26) and tomorrow (Friday, August 27) in their final tests for the start of the regular football season next week.

Plaquemine High and White Castle get it rolling tonight by taking on one another in the annual Port Allen High Jamboree. It will be the first meeting between PHS and WCHS in a number of years. Plaquemine has dominated the series since an early, upset loss to the Bulldogs in the early 1980s. However, this is the best WCHS club since that team to face the Green Devils.

Cohen High and the Central High JVs tangle in the PAHS Pelican jam opener, followed by hosting Port Allen against newly combined Clinton and Jackson as the new East Feliciana High. PHS and WCHS battle in the nightcap with a tentative 8 p.m. start.

Tomorrow (Friday) evening the St. John High Eagles head to Redemptorist High to take part in the annual All Catholic Baton Rouge Jamboree. The 1-A Eagles will play 4-A St. Michael’s for the second year in a row in the jam. It will be SJHS’ second trip to the jamboree as well.

St. Michael’s edged out SJHS in last year’s outing, but like last year, Coach Barry “Tut” Musemeche is treating the jam contest as a final workout for the regular season.

“We win and that is all the better, but we have goals we want to accomplish, win or lose,” noted the coach.

While St. John is up at Redemptorist, East Iberville High will be on the south side of the capital city at the annual East Baton Rouge Jamboree being held at Olympia Stadium off Perkins Road.

The 1-A Tigers will be stepping up in challenge from last weekend’s three-way scrimmage with fellow Class 1-A foes Crescent City Baptist and Houma Christian. EIHS will face 4-A McKinley High tomorrow night at Olympia.

Next week the regular season opens for all four parish football teams. St. John opens up the season Thursday, Sept. 2 by hosting 4-A Belaire High at Green Devil Stadium. Last year the state semifinalist Eagles romped to an easy win over Belaire at Olympia Stadium.

Friday, Sept. 3, the Plaquemine High Green Devils open at home by hosting Lusher Charter High out of New Orleans for the second year in a row. PHS won easily over the lower classification Lusher club on the road. The opener will be one of only three home games this year for Plaquemine.

East Iberville High will be at home for its opener next Friday as they host 3-A Baker High in St. Gabriel. Last year the Tigers opened with an easy victory over Mount Hermon High, but Baker’s Buffalos, coached by the brother duo and former EIHS head coach Tommy and Brian Spillman, will be a much tougher foe.

And, hitting the road next Friday, will be the Bulldogs of White Castle High as they head down and across the river to take on the hosting 2-A Riverside Academy Rebels. Despite a trio of winning gridiron seasons, the Bulldogs have dropped three-straight to the Rebels, who always are a solid Double A football school. WCHS Coach Ferrante Dominique says he and his ball club are determined to finally turn the tables on Riverside with the Bulldogs showing their most experienced gridiron team in a number of seasons.
