LOCKER ROOM...PHS Green Devil football players, from left, Dwayne Calloway, Hakeem Deggs, and LaRen Phillips enjoy the spacious and luxurious surroundings of their Team Locker Room.

Plaquemine High’s new Field House is in full operation and football coach Bob Howell gave the POST SOUTH a tour of the facilities last Thursday.

Inside the main entrance is a new trophy display case and a Green Devil mascot in the center of the foyer flooring. To the right is the doorway to an enormous Weight/Exercise Room with rows of workout equipment. To the left of the entrance way is a doorway to an equally large Player Locker Room that matches most seen at college football stadiums.

Directly behind the entrance way is Coach Howell’s office, complete with a comfortable seating area. Directly behind the head coach’s office is a spacious office for the gridiron assistant coaches, each with a seating area and desktop.

Windows are placed on both sides of the office areas so coaches can watch as players workout or dress in the locker room.

To the back of the facility are restrooms and a Film/Training Room, which has bleacher seating for the players and coaches to watch football video or for play instruction on a chart board. The school’s Athletic Trainer also has a work area.

“We are thrilled to be in place now and proud of our facility,” noted Coach Howell.

Now that the football team has departed, work in the rooms behind the gymnasium continued with hopes of completing final construction in that area by next week. An enormous new dressing room/training facility is near completion for the boy-girl indoor/gym sports and other activities.  Football once shared space with boys’ basketball on the backside of the gym.

Athletic Director/head boys’ hoop coach Denny Wright was found in a tiny office area on the opposite side of the cafeteria area from the gym.

“I’ll be over there in just a matter of days and it will be great. We are very pleased with the new athletic quarters behind the gym, as well, of  course, with the new Field House,” noted Wright.
