Pivotal district matchups top Week 8 football slate

The White Castle Bulldogs travel to Edgard tonight to face West St. John in a battle of unbeaten District 8-1A teams. The winner will emerge 8-1A champion.

One district title will be decided tonight, while two hope to keep playoff chances alive and another aims to prevent a winless season in local high school football action tonight.

The White Castle Bulldogs, ranked No. 10 in the Class 1A polls compiled by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association, visit Edgard for a showdown against West St. John. Both teams are unbeaten in District 8-1A fare, and would give the winner the league title. WCHS heads to WSJ after a 69-0 win last week over Ascension Catholic of Donaldsonville.

The Plaquemine Green Devils visit the Brusly Panthers in a key 8-3A matchup that both teams need to maintain a shot at the district championship.

Plaquemine (4-3) enters the game after a 30-20 loss last week against Port Allen, while Brusly (2-5) suffered a 57-28 non-district loss at South Terrebonne.

St. John, riddled with injuries this season, could still have a chance at post-season action. The Eagles host Ascension Catholic tonight at Andrew Canova Stadium. SJHS (1-1 in district) coasted to a 42-6 win last week over Christian Life Academy.

Christian Life’s Crusaders host East Iberville in a battle of winless 8-1A teams. The young Tigers from St. Gabriel lost 57-6 last week against West St. John.
