Local jobless rate drops slightly
Iberville's employment picture improved slightly in September when an additional 118 jobs pushed the unemployment rate 11 to 10.7 percent, according to the latest report from the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
Seasonal back-to school gains improved both the statewide and national jobless rates.
Louisiana's rate dropped from 8.1 percent in August to 7.8 percent in September, though that was still nearly a point higher than the 6.7 percent recorded in September 2009.
Nationally, the rate dropped from 9.5 percent to 9.2 percent in September.
Iberville continued to have the second highest unemployment rate of the nine parishes in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area, where the rate had dropped from 8.2 to 7.8 percent between August and September. St. Helena Parish again had the highest rate, at 13.4 percent. Ascension's was 7.3; East Baton Rouge's, 7.5, and West Baton Rouge's, 8.8 percent.
Statewide, Iberville was among 16 Louisiana parishes with double-digit unemployment, the highest 16 percent in East Carroll Parish. Lafourche Parish again had the lowest, at 5.3 percent.
In September, there were 11,628 employed workers here, and 1,389 out of work. That is compared to 11,510 employed and 1,422 unemployed in August, and to 11,382 employed and 1,255 unemployed in September 2009, when the jobless rate stood at 9.9 percent.
