Downtown venues feature 'Art in the City'

Staff reports

The Plaquemine Main Street Program will host a three-day celebration of the arts at three Main Street venues next weekend as part of this year's statewide “cultural road show.”

Local and area artist and craftsmen will display and demonstrate their talents at the “Art in the City” event scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, November 11-13, at the Belle Fleur Fiber Arts Studio, the Iberville Museum and the Plaquemine Depot Market, according to Main Street Manager Kristine Hebert.

“We hope everybody will come out and make the rounds and see what's going on,” said Dr. Charlene Bishop, whose Belle Fleur studio is located at 58080 Main Street.

At all three locations, the schedule includes opening events on Thursday, November 11; open houses with refreshments on Friday, November 12, and artists' demonstrations and exhibits on Saturday, November 13.

At the Depot Market, featured work will include handcrafted heirloom clothing and French-style hand sewing techniques by Yvonne Smith, hand-made custom jewelry by Sissy Irwin and needlepoint by Karen Kirby. Cherry Settoon of Cherry Creates will feature custom framing with works of local artists.

An exhibit of Gene Seneca's photography will be on view at the Iberville Museum.

Belle Fleur will feature a cotton spinner, a master knitter, cross-stitch artist, quilters, a weaver, a jewelry maker and a demonstration of three-dimensional embroidery.

Bishop is inviting other artists to bring their own crafts to show or sell or to “come sit and sew.” Those interested can reach her at 687-8392 or 776-4119.

“Art in the City” is part of the Louisiana Main Street Program's “Main to Main—A Cultural Road Show,” the annual month-long “extravaganza” of festivals and special events at the state's 35 Main Street cities each November.

The sponsors include the City of Plaquemine Main Street Program, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, the state Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and the National Park Service Preserve America.
