L.J. RAYMOND

Longtime Iberville Parish educator and multiple Hall of Fame coach/official L.J. Raymond passed away Monday morning (see obituary in this section).

Raymond spent many years as the principal at Plaquemine High School, and, after retirement from the Iberville Parish School System, went on to serve as the principal at St. John High School in Plaquemine. He came to Plaquemine and coached a state runner-up football team in the 1960s. He was a member of the La. High School Athletic Assn. Hall of Fame, the LSU Track Officials Hall of Fame, and the Track Coaches Hall of Fame. He served as president of numerous educational and athletic associations.

He was a good friend to me for over thirty years and touched the lives of many people in the Plaquemine and the Iberville Parish communities.

Clerk of Court “Bubbie” Dupont called me Monday morning and voiced a deep loss of a coach, a friend, a second father. Dupont played football under Coach Raymond as high school student, sought and received his advice through college and his working career. Raymond worked part time for the Clerk of Court’s office and Dupont in recent years.

“The truth of the matter is I have lost a ‘real’ second father. This is not a good day for me,” noted Dupont.

I, like many others, will miss L.J. tremendously. His loss is a great loss to those of us who knew him through local sports, school, and family.
