Early voting starts Saturday

Early voting in the City of St. Gabriel's April 2 municipal primary elections opens from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Iberville Registrar of Voters' Office on the second floor of the Courthouse.

Early voting will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday next week (March 21-26).

Mayor George L. Grace Sr., the city's only mayor since its incorporation who is now under federal indictment, is being challenged in his re-election bid by former City Councilman Lionel Johnson Jr.

Police Chief Kevin “Butchie” Ambeau Sr. and former Police Chief Patrick Nelson Sr., the only two men to have served in that job, are going head to head again this election.

The five incumbent City Council members are in an at-large race with field of six challengers. The field includes incumbents Deborah “Debbie” Alexander, Flora Jean Danielfield, Freddie Carl Frazier Sr., Melvin Hasten Sr. and Ralph “Big Guy” Johnson Sr., and challengers Joseph Allen Jr., Juan Vashion Darville, Isiah Gilmore Sr., Keith “Lil Pest” Gordon, Kyle E. Grace and Kenya L. Nelson.

A run-off election in the council race, if needed, will be held on Saturday, April 30. Also that day, voters parishwide will decide the renewal of a 6.22 mill maintenance tax for the Iberville Parish School Board.
