Volunteers with boats or canoes are needed to help clean up Bayou Plaquemine from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday as part of a Great American Clean-Up event sponsored by Keep Iberville Beautiful and Parish President J. Mitchell Ourso Jr.

The bayou clean-up is scheduled just ahead of the Paddling to the Oldies Putt Putt Boat Show from 2-5 p.m. and Boogie on the Bayou from 5-9 p.m. at Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park, two events sponsored by the local organization We Are the Difference.

“We'll have bags, litter grabbers and gloves,” said Keep Iberville Beautiful Director John J. Clark. “If you have a boat, bring your boats because this is a waterway clean-up. It's an opportunity to make things look better.”

Motorboats will launch from the Enterprise Boat Landing and travel to the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park. Canoes can launch at the Waterfront Park.

The clean-up will target the area around the Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park and railroad bridge.

LSU bio-engineering students, who are working on a project to design equipment to capture litter flowing from the storm drains into Bayou Plaquemine, will assist with the clean-up.  The Plaquemine

Garden Club will provide ground support and refreshments for the volunteers.
