Bucket Scott arrested in hit and run accident

Iberville Parish Councilman Henry J. “Bucket” Scott of Bayou Goula turned himself in Tuesday on an arrest warrant charging him with hit and run in connection with an accident involving a bicyclist late Monday on La. 1 just south of Plaquemine, Maj. Johnny Blanchard of the Iberville Sheriff's Office said.

Once he's released from a Baton Rouge hospital, the 41-year-old  bicyclist will be ticketed for disregarding a traffic control law by traveling in the wrong lane, and, contingent on further investigation, possibly for riding at night without lights, Blanchard said. Cyclists are supposed to ride with the flow of traffic, and are required to have lights on bicycles ridden at night, he said.

The cyclist was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge for treatment and remained there on Wednesday, Blanchard said. He said he did not know the extent of the injuries, but the man was walking around at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 11:43 p.m. Monday.

Blanchard said the cyclist had left the truck stop just outside the city and was traveling north in a southbound lane toward True Hope Subdivision.

Deputies responding to the scene got a description of the hit and run vehicle, which they matched Tuesday to one owned by Scott, he said.

“The damage to the vehicle was consistent with the damage described,” the major said. “While they were checking the vehicle, Bucket drove up, and they spoke to him. He said he thought he ran over a tire in the road. He stopped at the truck stop 100 yards down the road to check it,” but drove on.

“Late Tuesday evening, the deputies got all the information together and drew up an arrest warrant on Bucket for not goig back to see what he hit,” Blanchard said.

Scott, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered himself Wednesday afternoon at the Courthouse, he said.

Scott was released later Wednesday on a $10,000 bond set by District Judge William C. Dupont.
