Early voting on tax renewal ends Saturday
Early voting on the Iberville Parish School Board's 6.22-mill maintenance tax renewal ends Saturday at the Iberville Registrar of Voters' Office. The office will be closed for the Good Friday holiday.
On the first two days of early voting in the April 30 election, at least 241 of the parish's 21,000 voters had cast ballots, according to the Registrar's office, including 187 on Saturday and 54 by 5:50 p.m. Monday.
A spokeswoman for the Registrar's office also said there would be an emergency precinct change for voters in Precinct 19, who normally vote at the Kleinpeter Agricultural Building at 23640 Peters Street, Plaquemine. On April 30, they will vote at the Ibderville Council on Aging building at 58105 Court Street, Plaquemine.
The School Board is asking voters to renew the maintenance tax that has been on the parish tax rolls continuously for 74 years.
The tax produces some $2.4 million, only part of the $8 million it costs for utilities, insurance, repairs and maintenance at the school system's nine public schools and its Central Office.
Those costs are expected to rise as the system adds another 209,000 square foot of space in the current $49 million construction program. Before the new construction began, the system had some 1,036,000 square feet of buildings to maintain, including schools that were built or fully renovated 20 years ago that now need new heating and air conditioning systems.
