Library celebrates Children's Book Week

Staff reports

The eight locations of your Iberville Parish Library will celebrate Children’s Book Week Monday through Saturday, May 2-8, with bookmarks, handouts, displays – and forgiveness of late fees.

Since 1919, Children's Book Week has been celebrated nationally in schools, libraries, bookstores, clubs, and private homes -- any place where there are children and books.  With literacy rates in the United States decreasing and too many students failing reading proficiency exams, the need for Children’s Book Week today is as important as when it began 92 years ago, the library said in a news release.

Children’s Book Week introduces young people to authors, illustrators and books in schools, libraries, homes, and bookstores. Through Children’s Book Week, the Children’s Book Council encourages young people and their caregivers to discover the complexity of the world beyond their own experience through books.

As an added bonus, Children’s Book Week will also be a fine free week, a chance for patrons to return overdue materials without charge.
