Sherri Breaux, who is the wife of former Plaquemine resident Keith J. Breaux, received an honor recently from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Breaux was given the 2011 Kevin B. Harrington Award for Excellence in Democracy Education.

She helped create and staff the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council as a staffer for the State Senate. Her title with the state is Chief Legislative Researcher and Director of Resource/Infrastructure Division of the State Senate.

The LYAC brings high school students into contact with state legislatures and develops a field of communication. During legislative session in June, Breaux plans a two-day event with a public hearing and seminar attended by public officials and the students. She also coordinates a back-to-school program for state senators to visit classrooms in their districts.

Sherri is the daughter-in-law of Sidney “Zeke” Breaux and Barbara Breaux.
