Property may be taken for tax debt

The Iberville Parish Council plans to take over 26 pieces of property unless the owners pay their back taxes.

The council last week introduced an ordinance to acquire the “tax adjudicated property.” The ordinance is set for public hearing and possible the ordinance at its next meeting, on September 20.

After that, the list of property will be published in the POST/SOUTH, and the owners will have another chance to settle their tax debt before the property is sold.

The process is set out in a state law aimed at encouraging payment of taxes and encouraging return of the property to commerce.
