St. Gabriel Jambalaya Cook-off set for Sept. 11

Staff reports

St. Gabriel’s fifth annual Papa George Fairchild Jambalaya Cook-off to support the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be held Sept. 11.

The event will be held at the St. Gabriel Catholic Church. The event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 3796.

Over the last three years of the event, $30,000 has been collected for the St. Jude Hospital.

The cook-off will be with chicken jambalaya cooked on wood like Fairchild had done back in 1968 in the original contest. There will be an adult cook-off (starting early in the a.m.) and a mini-pot cook-off for youth (beginning at 10:30 a.m.). Entry fee will be $10. Awards will be presented for first, second, and third places.

Jambalaya will be on sale, beginning at 11 a.m.

Homemade sweets, a raffle, t-shirts, hats, and koozies will be part of the event. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The KCs are seeking cooks to compete, volunteers to help with the event, and persons willing to make donations for prizes, etc.
