Both the Plaquemine High boy and girl basketball teams tied for runner-up honors in the District 6-4A races on the eve of the state playoffs Monday night.

The Green Devil boys turned back Lutcher High on the road by a 40-32 score to finish with a 9-3 record and a tie for second with 9-3 Tara High behind league champ Istrouma. On the same evening at LHS, the PHS girls closed out with a 63-42 victory to finish in a tie for second place with Broadmoor High as both teams closed district play with identical 8-4 records, but the Lady Green Devils will enter the state playoffs and the number three team out of the 6-4A because they lost twice to Broadmoor during league play. Broadmoor goes to the playoffs and the number two team in the district behind champion St. Michael.

Plaquemine’s boys were set to play Tara in a tiebreaker Tuesday night. The victor will gain a half-a-point in the power point ratings, which will aid in the winner’s playoff bracketing.

Jesse Ward led PHS to the victory at Lutcher Monday with 20 points. He was followed by Demetrius Franklin with 6 points and Davon Godchaux and Jacorey Johnson with 5 apiece. Deondre Philson netted 4 points.

The 25-7 overall PHS boys led 17-15 at intermission and pulled away in the second half.

The 18-8 overall Lady Green Devils took a huge 18-4 advantage in the first period and coasted from there to victory Monday night Amber Smith poured in 24 points to lead PHS, while Kadijah Mims added 15 and Brianna Arnold 12 points. Myeisha Bell and Jamira Russ combined for 10 more points.
