City of St. Gabriel begins construction on Senior Center expansion

The City of St. Gabriel recently began construction on its Senior Center at City Hall.  This center serves similarly to the Iberville Parish Council on Aging facilities by providing activities and a cafeteria for St. Gabriel and surrounding area senior residents.

The expansion is a 2,500 foot addition and was spearheaded by Mayor Lionel Johnson and the St. Gabriel City Council.  The addition will provide more space for the growing senior population in East Iberville.  The City plans to do a grand opening for the expansion and will invite parish officials, according to Mayor Johnson.

“The parish partnered with us because our Senior Center was something that was established by my predecessor,” Mayor Lionel Johnson said.  “When I got here, we realized we were duplicating services, so the parish partnered with us and we have an understanding that even though the city runs it, it still services senior citizens that live in the parish but not the city.”

According to Mayor Johnson, the parish provided generous donations towards equipment for cooking, the lounge area and when the city first made the transition.

“It is a blessing to be in this position,” Johnson said.  “I see the growth, more importantly, my people see the growth.  It is important for me for them to see where our dollars are going.”

The construction is estimated to be completed by May 2017.
