On Tuesday, January 31 more than 130 parents, teachers, students and community members assembled in the Conference Center at Dow’s Louisiana Operations in Plaquemine for the fourth annual Iberville and West Baton Rouge Dow Westside “You Be the Chemist Challenge”.  The event is sponsored locally and nationally by Dow, and is an academic competition created by the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF).

Thirty 6th – 8th grade students, 15 from Iberville Parish and 15 from West Baton Rouge Parish, competed against one another through numerous rounds of multiple-choice questions that tested their knowledge of chemistry concepts, important discoveries, and chemical safety awareness.

“Education is the driver for innovation, manufacturing and economic prosperity in our communities,” said Abby Cook, Public Affairs Manager at Dow’s Louisiana Operations. “Support of the local ‘You Be the Chemist Challenge’ is one of Dow’s many local STEM education commitments to help build the workforce of tomorrow.”

After seven rounds of competition the Champion, First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up from both Iberville and West Baton Rouge Parishes were decided.  In Iberville Parish, Jayden Cooper, MSA-West, received Champion (First Place).  Robert Grace, MSA-West, achieved First Runner-Up and Kristopher Cayette, MSA-West, placed Second Runner-Up.  In West Baton Rouge Parish, Naturi Scott, Port Allen Middle, was named Champion.  Gustavo Rojas, Devall Middle, achieved First Runner-Up and Laurel Fishburn, Brusly Middle, achieved Second Runner-Up.
