DEQ to host public hearing in St. Gabriel

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will hold a public hearing at the St. Gabriel Community Center Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 6 p.m.

According to St. Gabriel Mayor Lionel Johnson, the content of the subject is Adsorbent Solutions, known to city officials as “ADSO”, a facility that has been located in city limits for at least 20 years.

“ADSO has come to the city to request a variance and approval to expand and improve their operation,” Johnson said.  “They came on my radar after we received some complaints about an odor.  Sometimes the odor may have come from them or from someone else, but as Mayor I don’t control air quality.”

The air quality control responsibility falls directly into the hands of DEQ, according to Johnson.  “I have faith that DEQ will hold them (ADSO) to the standard.”

Adsorbent Solutions has requested, in addition to their expansion, to build a stack that is 75-feet tall.  By law, ADSO must ask the city for permission to build a structure that is taller than sixty feet.

Mayor Johnson said he and his council have not voted on the approval yet and would wait to discuss the matter further with the DEQ.  “A lot will be based upon the hearing this Tuesday,” Johnson said.
