Five people, including two Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Deputies and two Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Deputies were injured after being involved in a two-vehicle crash in Plaquemine around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, according to Plaquemine Chief of Police Kenny Payne.

Two vehicles, one an unmarked Tahoe the other occupied by a single driver, were traveling southbound on Hwy. 1.  The single-driver vehicle was driving in the right lane and attempted to make a hard left turn, Payne said.

The deputies, driving in the left lane, attempted to avoid the collision, but the sharp turn caused the deputies to make impact with the front right portion of their vehicle.  The unmarked Tahoe skidded sideways then hit a curb which in turn caused the vehicle carrying the four deputies to flip at least twice, according to Payne.

All four deputies and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“I’m thankful that everybody walked away,” Iberville Sheriff Brett Stassi said.  “This was a pretty violent accident.”

Louisiana State Police was called in to investigate the incident.
