Child lunch/breakfast program continues, but ends delivery

The lunch/breakfast program for all children under 18 in Iberville Parish will continue, but in a different format.

The Iberville Parish School Board ended bus delivery for the program due to the growing concerns on spread of the coronavirus, but the service will continue at five sites across the parish, Iberville Parish School Board Superintendent Arthur Joffrion said Tuesday.

The lunch/breakfast combos will be distributed from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the MSA West campus in Plaquemine, Iberville Elementary School in Plaquemine, White Castle High School, North Iberville Elementary in Rosedale and East Iberville Elementary/High School in St. Gabriel.

The duration of the program remains uncertain, Joffrion said.

It’s literally a day to day decision,” he said. “Certainly, we’re listening and trying to adhere to all the orders directed from President Trump, Gov. Edwards and Parish President Ourso.

We hope to do this as long as we can, but if it gets to a point that it endangers people and becomes unhealthy for the staff, we will have to take the appropriate action,” Joffrion said .”It’s a decision we don’t take too lightly.”

The service continues with the help of a dedicated group of employees, but it doesn’t end with the feeding program.

Many of our essential employees are still working on a regular basis to make sure we continue to pay bills, pay employees and make sure the system runs,” he said. “That doesn’t happen by chance, but by hard work, dedication and diligence of people behind the scenes, and I think it’s important to continue to do the work for our employees.”
