Watch live: Industry leaders discuss Biden's ban on oil and gas leases in Gulf of Mexico
President Joe Biden's administration is gathering industry, government and environmental officials in an online forum today to discuss the federal government's plans for the future of oil drilling on U.S. lands and waters.
U.S. Interior officials say the online forum will gather input from industry, government and environmental officials in the wake of Biden's indefinite ban on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters, including the Gulf of Mexico.
Officials say the pause is necessary as the administration works to control climate change and its resulting pollution, rising seas and other harmful effects on the nation and world.
Biden's actions have little immediate impact on drilling now underway in the Gulf, which is allowed to continue. But oil interests are concerned Biden is pushing to fulfill a campaign promise to halt new oil and gas leasing on federal land and waters permanently. He has pledged to curb greenhouse gasses from fossil fuels that fuel global warming.
