Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian on La. 1 (Eden Street) south of La. 75 (Belleview Road) in Iberville Parish, according to Trooper Bryan Lee.

The Troop A spokesman said shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, a young man was driving southbound on La. 1 when he struck a 60-year-old man running across the highway for unknown reasons.

The crash later took the life of the Lionel Asberry of Plaquemine, the pedestrian involved in the accident, Lee said. He added the investigation is ongoing and one of the factors being examined is why he was crossing the road.

Lee said the initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Asberry was running across La. 1 at the same time Corey Caillet, 34, of Plaquemine, was traveling southbound on La. 1 in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado.

Asberry ran into the path of Caillet’s vehicle and was struck in the southbound lane of La. 1, the spokesman said.

Asberry sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash, Lee said and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

Caillet was properly restrained and was not injured in the crash, the spokesman said and while impairment is not suspected, a toxicology sample will be taken from both Asberry and Caillet for analysis.
