10-year-old boy dies after falling into icy pond near Millington; sister critical
A 10-year-old boy died and his 6-year-old sister is in critical condition after the kids fell through the ice and into a pond Sunday morning, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's office.
Sheriff's deputies and firefighters were called about 11 a.m. Sunday to a home off Brunswick Road east of Millington, said Lt. Dallas Wolfe, Shelby County Sheriff's Office public information officer.
The temperature around 11 a.m. Sunday was 14 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.
Both children were transported to Le Bonheur's Children Hospital in critical condition and the boy was pronounced deceased at the hospital, Wolfe said.
He said the cause of death is unknown but it was presumed the boy drowned.
Wolfe does not know how long both children were in the water but "since the little girl survived I would estimate it wasn't all that long for her to be able to survive."
