More than 10,500 in Acadiana without power on snowy Lundi Gras. See outage updates
Lundi Gras snow and ice caused power outages across parts of Acadiana, leaving more than 10,500 customers without electricity Monday morning.
The majority of outages in Acadiana were in Iberia and Vermilion parishes, which accounted for more than 8,000 customers without power, according to outage maps.
More than 7%, or 1,165, of SLEMCO customers in Vermilion Parish were without power at 9 a.m. Monday, according to the company's outage map. Crews responded quickly to whittle that number down to about 130 by 9:45 a.m.
Mary Laurent, communications coordinator for SLEMCO, said most of the remaining outages were in more isolated and wooded areas, which could take more time to address due to access. But all of the company's field crews were out on the road working, she said.
"The biggest issues our field crews said they've seen have been fallen tree limbs on lines," Laurent said Monday morning.
POWER OUTAGE MAP: Check the outages after winter storm hits Acadiana
The company saw as many as more than 5,000 customers across the Acadiana region without power early Monday morning, and added that the number changes quickly as power is restored or more lines fall.
"The heavier the ice is the more lines come down," Laurent said. "So we're hoping for not too much of a build-up. But we prepare with extra materials and supplies just like after a hurricane."
One-half of an inch of ice can add up to 500 pounds of extra weight to a single span of wire between two poles, Laurent said.
Some Vermilion Parish residents who use Entergy also lost power — with 845 customers without electricity on the snowy morning.
In Iberia Parish, 574 Entergy customers and 6,954 Cleco customers were without power about 10 a.m. Monday, according to company outage maps. That's nearly 25% of the Cleco customers in Iberia.
"In addition to the ice and snow we did get some high winds," Cleco Corporate Communications Manager Jennifer Cahill said.
Cleco also has secured nearly 500 additional resources to assist with storm clean-up and power restoration, according to a release.
Cleco also was addressing outages in St. Martin Parish, which had 456 customers without electricity, and in St. Mary Parish, where 2,523 customers had lost power, according to Cleco's outage map.
